About Me

Hi, my name is Jessica and I have been training dogs since I was a little girl. I would hook my dog Prissy's leash up to my little red wagon and command my dogs to "mush!" while I threw treats in front of them. Sometimes they listened, and sometimes they didn't, but either way it thrilled me to be able to teach my dogs new things even back then. Now I am armed with a Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science from the California Polytechnic Institute Pomona and experience dating back from my toddler mushing days in dog training and I am ready to help you! Professionally, I have worked as a trainer with Petco, where I revolutionized my local store's training program into the method's they use today, and with Petsmart as well. In 2011 I was certified through the American Kennel Club as a Canine Good Citizen Evaluator and have helped train many dogs to go on to serve as therapy and service dogs. In 2008 I started my own private dog training business which I called Jessica's Dog Training, but later changed the name to Dog Sense Dog Training in 2012. I've had many clients come through my classes, and each one as unique as the little fur-kid at their feet. If there's one thing I've learned, its that you never know what to expect and each dog learns differently.

Luckily, one thing I LOVE to do is research. I am not one to rest on my laurels, so when I am not busy training I am reading veterinary journals, magazine articles, books, and anything else I can get my hands on. Because of my tenacity when it comes to learning everything dog, I am well versed in all aspects of canine behavior, body language, nutrition, first aid, learning theory, diseases, and more. I currently teach classes in obedience, service dog training and Canine Good Citizen as well as seminars on potty training, walking on a loose leash, disaster preparedness for pets, senior dog wellness, and others. I love what I do and enjoy sharing my knowledge with other pet owners. I'm one of those dog owners who everyone calls in the middle of the night if they need emergency advice, and who everyone has a question for. The good thing is... I always have an answer! I use every resource available to me so that I am always current on the new techniques, technologies, and latest happenings in the pet world. I love learning and sharing what I know, and now I get to share that knowledge with all of you!

I have set up this page to share what I know and to promote my new classes. This page is also here for my current students to browse if they have any training problems or they want to further their canine education. I firmly believe that the keys to a successful relationship with your dog include consistency, clarity, patience, and to never stop learning. In my training sessions I deliver a healthy dose of education that goes above and beyond sit and stay. I cover nutrition and health, exercise, the canine mind and how it works, why your dogs do the things they do, and so much more! I love to learn, and I hope you will too!

As for me, I currently live with my 15 year old Alaskan Malamute, Cindy, and my 6 year old Beagle/Shepherd mix Karma and 6 cats (who think they are dogs too!). And since I'm a pet parent myself I love bragging about my babies, so check out this awesome photo montage of me and Cindy's photoshoot from June 2012 made by the wonderful people at Dogma Pet Photography (even the cat couldn't resist, Amelia snuck in too)!

Thanks for reading and taking this awesome journey with me- the journey of being a pet parent! :)
